Dear Russell,
I am happy to have you as a subscriber to Roosl's
Graphic Design. I hope you continue to find my
newsletter interesting and find the time to visit the
website often! Depending on the category of interest
you have chosen, you may soon receive updates with
varying themes and appearance.
In this issue, I'll fill you in on what's new and exciting,
as well as some other topics worth mentioning! I hope
you have a great Fourth of July weekend!
Need for Speed!
Since the summer of 1996, I have been using my
faithful and nurtured original Pentium machine with the
166 Mhz CPU. Now, please, when I got that system, it
was the bees knees, the cat's pajamas, slicker than a
peeled onion, the... well, you know.
Some might wonder (and recently had) how I could or
would do graphics, especially the 3-D raytracing,
with "such an old, slow system". Well, it didn't used to
seem slow, although there were times I would cuss,
reboot, and wait for hours for a scene to render (a
rendering is the final result you see in the gallery). But
of course, it was acceptable.
Finally, Roosl has upgraded! Not only has the need
increased for performance and productivity, but prices
for hardware have decreased dramatically the past few
years. Roosl's Graphic Design now sports a 2.4 Ghz
Pentium 4 system! Other than the CPU itself, the new
machine is loaded with other support systems that
really make a world of difference. Thanks to J&B
Technologies, I had only 4 days of downtime over a
weekend! Besides, I had honey-dos to do, so all worked
out well...
I'll conclude this news with a noteworthy benchmark:
One of the first things I did once set up, was load a
recent scene into RayDream Studio which I had created
on the old machine, which had taken over two hours to
render. This machine did it in under 3 minutes. What a
great machine!

3-D Gallery update |
 |
A few new 3-D images have been uploaded to the
gallery. These newest works employ a lot of reflective
and transparent objects, and multiple light sources.
Also, a couple of favorites, "Up and Down" and "Breeze"
have been reworked.
My wife says that I am lost in "The Matrix" while I work
on these projects. She's not far off the mark! But I do
finally emerge from the X,Y and Z coordinates with
some stuff worth posting for you to see! With the new
system, this work is so much faster to develop, so
watch for new stuff to appear more often!
Check out "Sphere Play" and "The Office". Both have
the seemingly ever-present influence of M.C. Escher. I
think you'll also like the redux as well!

Virus Alert! |
 |
Please be advised that those malefactors out there are
again (and holding no quarter) sending e-mails with
viruses attached. That's not news itself, but lately,
some appear to be from me. I assure you that I will
never send such messages. Some have subject lines
such as "Re: application", "a nice game", etc.. and ask
you to open an attachment that looks like a zip file or
other. I've been getting these also. Some appear to be
from roosl@roosl.com. Some are from
roosl@whatever.
It's easy to fool SMTP (simple mail transfer protocol)
with a "from" address that is anything you want it to
appear as. It only needs to "look like" a real address,
e.g: string@string.domain. That's how some valid use of
the process allows one to send mail with a "reply to" of
another address.
I hope you have and use the latest antivirus software!
I can't stress enough how important that is these days.
It's saved my PC countless times. The newest from
Symantec (Norton), Antivirus 2003, even catches
viruses as the messages are being downloaded (if you
use a client like Outlook) before you get a chance to
see it in your message header pane. It's good stuff! As
well, I have mine setup to scan my outgoing messages
too, just in case something I forward might contain
something. It also automatically updates itself with the
latest virus definitions everytime I go online.
If you don't use an antivirus program, get one! Even if
your e-mail messages remain outside your PC (such as
AOL, Yahoo, hotmail..), that is, you don't download
your mail with a client, get one anyway. I personally
like Symantec, and feel it's the best, but get a good
one, no matter who the vendor is!
