The Heat is On Google this
June 2009

Hey, Roosl,

Well, the solstice is approaching, so the heat is on here in the hemisphere which I still call home. This means of course, that you Aussies and New Zealanders frequenting the gallery and software pages are getting out the sweats and enjoying cooler nights, eh?

Change is always good for the blue ball.

This issue is regarding the gallery for the most part, as I've posted many new images since last we visited, and likely at least one or 2 since you last visited!

I've been implementing a few of Google's services and want to share a bit of that with you as well.

Also, since some of you know me as more than just the guy whose website you look at and who sends you a newsletter, I have some sad news to let you know about.

..and of course, my warmest welcome to you new subscribers! Thank you again for your interest!

  • 3D Gallery News

This is a recent new work, one of a set detailing my Garden Home project.

With several projects, I've found that more than one view or lighting (such the time of day with an outdoor scene) is not only more art (and fun) for the work involved, but it offers the viewer more choices.

A good example is this large architectural project, with which I had little choice. So much detail went into parts of the scene that would never be visible from another view. This is one of 7 images from this project.

One of the great things about working in 3D is that of moving around in the scene and viewing it (and rendering an image) from any angle.

You'll find other photorealistic work in the gallery, such as a few more I'll tell you about below.

    Gallery Updates and Additions

This is a new illusion I know you'll like. Based on (surprise) an M. C. Escher work, I call it Obviewscation

In some long overdue work, I finally achieved this nice waterfall. You'll find detail in these scenes I had some fun with.

    Close to the Edge

If you liked my home office project I told you about in the last issue, and you like sci-fi, then you'll like these fun images! This is one of 3.

    Organic Mischief

There is more I haven't mentioned here, so go discover!

    Coming soon...
For those that enjoy the fantasy images, I plan to produce some more imagery along those lines, featuring... hmmmm....

    Google and Roosl

I finally accepted that generic search engine submissions and other experiments such as those touted by some so-called "experts" were not the only (and certainly not the best) way to promote Roosl's Graphic Design.

My primary goal is to help more people find my work, in particular the gallery. An artist wants people to see his work, right? So, I decided to employ the same tools that many use to sell stuff, to simply get people to come have a look.

During my research, I encountered scams, apparent scams and complaints of scams. Some such want you to pay them to continually "send" fake visitors to your site so it looks like you have a lot of "hits", though none are real people. I see no point in that, and certainly no value.

I spent part of May researching, trying and now fully utilizing several of Google's tools. These are an honest and effective means to a realistic goal.

One such tool that I now use produces keyword and content search results displaying on Google and their partner sites and search engines. In the past few weeks, Google alone has sent hundreds of new visitors to the gallery.

I've also enlisted Google Analytics, a free service. This is a nice tool that helps me see where visitors come from (geographically), what sent them (search engine, search phrase, etc.), what pages they visited, for how long, and other great stuff!

Now, if you're one of the paranoid, let me assure you that none of this stuff can show any webmaster who a person is. The most granular information about a visitor is, for example, city, state, country and what kind of browser a session is using. So, I can see that at a certain time, a visitor in Berlin using Windows XP and a Firefox browser at 1280x1024 resolution, 32 bit color depth, was redirected to my gallery from a Google search for "dragon", and stayed for 2 minutes. That's awesome to know. I don't know who it is, and I don't need to know.

So, for example, when I see a lot of searches for "dragon", and gallery visitors looking at "Dragon's Fantasy", it's fairly obvious people want to see more of that stuff. Hence, I may post a few new fantasy images including the dragon. Or maybe it's his girlfriend they like. Anyway...

You may have noticed that I now have a custom Google Search on several pages too. That's just one feature that's more for you than for me. When you enter a search, the results appear in another window, where you may do more regular Google searches, all within a page at Roosl.com.

    In Memoriam

..of my Mom, who departed this life March 13, 2009.

This spring was a pretty tough time for my siblings and me. It was hard when we lost our Dad, but I must say that losing Mom was a lot tougher. Different. There is a loss not only of a special loved one, but that of your only connection to physical life itself.

The image above is one for her. It was her wish to have her ashes scattered over the Sandia Mountains in Albuquerque. Working on this project helped me a great deal to cope with the loss, thoughts, memories and to busy myself with what Mom knows I love. I wanted to depict a scene she would like to spend time in. She loved her plants, such as a pineapple plant I started for her years ago which bloomed and bore fruit. She loved her dogs, and she loved life, her family and God.

She always liked my work, too. But, of course, she is my Mom.

    Time and Space

    God,

Often it seems, as we perceive, that this life is too short.

But then, that in itself provides that this cannot be all there is. Only humans, in our selfish ignorance, would waste such a thing as Life.

Thank You for the time and the things that have passed, and again for tomorrow, that my time today, and the perspective you show me, will bring.

Forever grateful to God for His given blessings, I'll always have time and space for what His presence and meaning are to me in my life...

Be nice to each other. See you soon!
    -Roosl

How cool would it be to forward this newsletter to all your friends?

Do you think they like bad jokes? No... No... Do people you share cool stuff with really like to get links to videos of idiots wasting their lives? No.. No.. Don't you think they would much rather get this newsletter? Yes...

    Contest!

Be the 1st to answer the following question, and win the prize!

Question: In the description of an image titled "Commuter Shuttle", I made a reference to a television show. What is the title of that show?

The prize: Pick your favorite image from the gallery (dated 2008 or later) and I'll custom render it for you at any size you wish. Suppose you want a desktop wallpaper of an image for your 1680x1250 resolution screen. Centering the 800x600 version in the gallery is too small. Having windows stretch it just distorts and ruins it. A custom render will produce the size you want in perfect resolution.

    Rules:
    1. Post your answer in my Guestbook by June 14. Emails don't count. The first correct answer wins. The time posted by the guestbook application is the official time. Be sure to use the public area, which I will have cleared of old entries by the time you read this. Your answer should be posted in the form "The contest answer is: ...".
    2. If you win, be realistic with your request. I mean, don't ask for an image that's a million pixels wide, or anything silly like that. You may specify DPI other than 100, if you wish. Default DPI is 100.

You do not have to be a subscriber (original newsletter recipient) in order to enter and win.

    TMI

The most searched and viewed images this past month are the fantasy themed dragon images.

The most popular download is my free desktop calendar.

Roosl.com receives more visitors from Europe and the United Kingdom than from all of the USA.

More than half of all visitors spend more time in the gallery than any other page.
