Happy Spring! Grunts from the Roosl Cave
March 2009

Greetings, Roosl,

Ok, I guess it's not quite Spring yet. But hey, it feels like it, and Roosl is actually beating the calendar to it instead of flipping almost all the pages of his World Wildlife Fund calendar before he writes a newsletter!

This issue is all about the gallery, and I prefer to think you've seen it as recently as yesterday, because you visit the site often...

Ok, I know some of you are too busy to browse the internet, much less your favorite overly-confident graphic artist's site, so read on, and Happy Spring!

..and of course, the proverbial welcome to you new subscribers! Thank you again for your interest!

  • Refurbishing the 3D Gallery - part II

This is a recent new work, one of a set detailing the Roosl Cave.

I've made more changes to the look and feel of the gallery itself.
The gallery's preview (front) page still displays a full size recent work, and now includes updated introductory info, and links directly to each "room" in the gallery.

The main page now has larger thumbnail images (are they still "thumbnail"?). The new design includes safe programming to pop up a "Viewer" in which artwork will display. This is safe, and is just another browser window, designed for better viewing. In order to enjoy the viewer, you must allow your browser to run Javascript and allow pop-ups from Roosl.com.

During this time, I've also reorganized the directories and files supporting the gallery. In doing so, I broke links in old documents, such as back issues of this newsletter. I'm working to fix the old newsletters (in my "back issues" page), and anyone who finds an old link to the main gallery page is automatically redirected to the new.

You'll find some serious photorealistic work in the gallery now, such as the few I'll tell you about below.

    ...more to come!

What's new in the 3D Gallery

This is the Roosl Cave, one of a series of photorealistic works, a painstakingly detailed reproduction of my office, where I do all this stuff. I modeled each piece of furniture, the PC, monitor, scanner, printer, keyboard (down to the characters on each key) and everything else to scale. Details such as the books and post-it notes on the shelf are exactly as at the time I developed this project. Some of my clutter was omitted, but the stuff that doesn't change much is all here, including my ever-present Coke.

So, now you've seen my cave, here is a short preview of what else is new:

A redux of the cubicle farm... Here is a highly detailed work involving many objects in a scene not too unfamiliar. Maybe this is where you work?

    The Office

I found myself in space here, observing these orbiting cities connected by commuter tubes. The job here was one of scale, and placing the viewer within one of the structures. The large magnitude scene is built in virtual units of feet, and the orbiting cities are miles apart. The commuter tubes are 60,000 feet long, a city is around 14,000 feet in diameter. The view is from within Concourse B - Commuter Level 4 - City 1. Details in accompanying work include commuter information, illustrating your location.

    Orbit

How about a pleasant walk through the arboretum? Several species of plants and trees are here under the arched trellis, along with moss and mushrooms on the moist, shady ground. Slow down, take your time. Perhaps a cool cross breeze from the outside will find you. Sit on a bench and watch colorful moths play around the lights, while a frog watches a gecko from a patch of grass.

    Arboretum

There is more I haven't mentioned here, including a new animation, and the rendering engine is still heating up the CPU!

    Coming this week...
You just want to come to this place and think. It's a peaceful place, and the air now is sweet after a fresh rain. Here is where you tend to the plants, the quiet, breath God's everything, and tend to yourself. This is Sanctuary.

    Time and Space

    God,

Thank you for the inspiration and appreciation that your seemingly simple things bring.

In the grand and infinite, seemingly complex man made things are really simple things, and I appreciate that the seemingly simple insect is a much more complex achievement, even in it's relative insignificance.

Thank You for the time and the things that have passed, and again for tomorrow, that my time today, and the perspective you show me, will bring.

Forever grateful to God for His given blessings, I'll always have time and space for what His presence and meaning are to me in my life...

    See you soon!
    -Roosl
